What is the Intention & Purpose of a CIL?

An important person in our organization's history described a Center for Independent Living (CIL) like this:

An Independent Living Center's main goal is empowerment of people that have, as one facet of their existence, a disability.

The primary method of empowerment is through knowledge transfer. Simply put, centers assist consumers to become knowledge able enough to take care of their own affairs by helping them grow as people better able to cope with life and the opportunities it presents.

For an Independent Living Center to be an effective self-help resource, staff must be good providers of information assistance. At its basis, an independent living center is a repository or library of disability information. Some in printed tangible form and some in intangible personal knowledge forms. The formidable task is to make that information available to consumers, on request.
