On April 23, 2016, the inaugural TRIPIL Capital Campaign Walk * Run * Roll brought together people to get some exercise, have some fun, and raise money for the renovation of the old YWCA building in Washington, PA, into TRIPIL’s new, modern, and “green” headquarters.

Beautiful Mingo Creek Park in Finleyville, PA, was the site for the first-ever Walk * Run * Roll that TRIPIL’s attempted. It was a cool, partly cloudy Saturday morning, and the participants started arriving about a quarter-after 7 am to line up for the 7:30 on-site registration (or check-in for pre-registered folks) for an 8 am start. Along with their race bibs, pre-registered participants were given an event t-shirt with the logos of many of the corporate sponsors. (Other event sponsors opted for course or pavilion signage.)

Walkers, runners, manual rollers, and power rollers had their choice of parts of the course to tackle. Volunteers helped direct traffic where the trail crossed the road, and handed out water at stations along the course. At both Command & Control at Shelter 1 and the finish line, healthy snacks, protein bars, and juice were available. Transportation was provided along the course and at the finish line back to C&C, so that all could participate in the raffle and Chinese auction if they chose to, and to retrieve their vehicles.

Obstacles & Opportunities

In the interests of having an accessible race course for all people, TRIPIL worked closely with the staff of Mingo Creek Park and county officials to make the Walk * Run * Roll a great opportunity for fun, fellowship, and fundraising.

However, there were a few obstacles:

  • The bathrooms and some of the gravel paths were not as accessible as necessary.
  • The morning was colder than expected, and having coffee available would have been wise.
  • Shelter 1 was perhaps not the best rally point, as the accessible table was on the outside of the pavilion making a tight space even less accessible.
  • Alterations in the race’s course, especially with regard to path slopes, are probably in order to assure everyone has a safe and friendly run — “No Leash Hill” was certainly a large challenge this year!

With a little advance thought and coordination, all of these issues have low-cost and/or minimal effort solutions for next time!

Aside from these minor issues, our first Walk * Run * Roll was a great success, raising over $10,000 for the TRIPIL Capital Campaign! Thank you to all who donated!

  • Cash Donations (including registrations, Chinese auction, and raffle): $5,900
  • In-Kind Donations (goods, services, supplies, gifts, etc.): $4,900 value
