On July 8, 2016, as part of the Whiskey Rebellion Festival in Washington, PA, TRIPIL held an Adaptive Car Show. Staff members showed off their adaptive vehicle, talked to interested people about the history of accessible transportation in southwestern Pennsylvania, and shared memories about accessible transportation advocates who have passed on… but their contribution to being able to live and work independently in our community will never be forgotten.

With privately owned vehicles, hand controls or other modifications in a standard car are often a low-cost option to enable a driver with disabilities to find their own road. (And for others who are unwilling or unable to drive, modifications have come a long way from the full-size van or minivan choices.)

For many who cannot or do not want the expense of their own adaptive vehicle, local paratransit systems fill the gap, empowering consumers to go shopping, go to medical appointments, visit family, or enjoy an afternoon with friends.

The Adaptive Car Show took place in the upper parking lot of TRIPIL’s current Beau Street headquarters. The warm, partly cloudy Friday afternoon air was punctuated by the increasing number of passersby on the street, heading downtown for Festival activities. (TRIPIL has been a sponsor of the Whiskey Rebellion Festival for the past few years.) The media stopped by to interview staff — an article with pictures appears HERE and also linked from our Media & Press page. The public stopped by to chat and see the vehicles on display.

We hope to have additional Adaptive Car Shows — or other Assistive Technology-related events — to inform our community about the useful advances that help us all live more independently, where we wish and how we wish.

Accessible transportation is as diverse as the people who use it!
